Method

Step-by-step
  1. In a large bowl, whisk the chilled plain yogurt until smooth and creamy, ensuring no lumps remain. If the yogurt is very thick, add 1-2 tablespoons of water to achieve a pouring consistency.
  2. Add the jaggery powder (or brown sugar), black salt, roasted cumin powder, and red chili powder (if using) to the whisked yogurt.
  3. Gently fold all the ingredients together until the jaggery powder is completely dissolved and the spices are evenly distributed throughout the chutney. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice as desired.
  4. Transfer the Sweet Yogurt Chutney to a serving bowl. Garnish with finely chopped fresh mint and coriander leaves, if desired, just before serving.
  5. Serve chilled as a side with pakoras, samosas, biryani, or any Indian meal to add a refreshing, sweet, and tangy element.

Storage & Freezer Guide

Make it last
Refrigerator 3-4 days

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage. Stir well before serving.

Freezer Not recommended

Freezing is not recommended for this chutney as it can alter the texture of the yogurt, making it watery and grainy upon thawing.

Reheat Serve chilled

This chutney is traditionally served chilled and does not require reheating. If stored, simply stir and serve cold.

Chef’s Corner

  • For the best texture, use full-fat, thick yogurt. If using homemade yogurt, drain excess whey for a creamier consistency.
  • Adjust the sweetness and spice levels according to your preference. You can also add a pinch of dried ginger powder for an extra flavor dimension.
  • Always serve this chutney chilled, as its refreshing taste is best enjoyed cold, especially to complement warm or spicy dishes.
