Method

Step-by-step
  1. Rinse the brown rice thoroughly under cold running water 2-3 times until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and impurities.
  2. For best results, soak the rinsed brown rice in 2 cups of fresh water for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours. This helps reduce cooking time and improves texture.
  3. **Stovetop Method:** Drain the soaked rice. In a heavy-bottomed pot, combine the drained rice, 2.5 cups of fresh water, and salt (if using). Bring to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot tightly, and simmer for 35-40 minutes, or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is tender. Do not lift the lid during cooking.
  5. **Pressure Cooker Method:** Drain the soaked rice. In a pressure cooker, combine the drained rice, 2 cups of fresh water, and salt (if using). Close the lid and cook for 3-4 whistles on medium heat.
  6. After cooking, remove the pot/cooker from heat and let it rest, covered, for 10-15 minutes (stovetop) or allow the pressure to release naturally (pressure cooker).
  7. Fluff the cooked brown rice gently with a fork before serving. Serve hot with your favorite South Indian curries, sambar, or rasam.

Storage & Freezer Guide

Make it last
Refrigerator 3-4 days

Store leftover cooked brown rice in an airtight container once it has cooled completely. Ensure it’s not left at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Freezer Up to 3 months

Portion cooled brown rice into freezer-safe bags or containers. Remove as much air as possible before sealing. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

Reheat Stovetop/Microwave

**Microwave:** Sprinkle a tablespoon or two of water over the rice, cover, and microwave on high for 1-2 minutes until heated through. **Stovetop:** Add a splash of water to a pan, add rice, cover, and heat over low flame, stirring occasionally, until warm.

Chef’s Corner

  • **Soaking is Key:** Don’t skip the soaking step! It significantly improves the texture of brown rice, making it less chewy and more digestible, and also reduces cooking time.
  • **Water Ratio:** The water ratio for brown rice can vary slightly depending on the type and age of the rice. If your rice is too dry, add a little more water next time; if too mushy, reduce it.
  • **Perfect Fluff:** After cooking, let the rice rest, covered, for at least 10 minutes. This allows the steam to redistribute and the grains to firm up, resulting in perfectly fluffy rice.
  • **Batch Cooking:** Cook a larger batch of brown rice at the beginning of the week for easy meal prep. It’s a healthy base for numerous meals.
