Method

Step-by-step
  1. Rinse the Basmati rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear; set aside to drain.
  2. In a medium saucepan or pot, heat olive oil or ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter for a few seconds.
  3. Add the finely chopped onion and green chili (if using) to the pot. Sauté until the onion turns translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Stir in the turmeric powder (if using) and the drained Basmati rice. Toast the rice gently for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Pour in the water or vegetable broth and add salt to taste. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil.
  6. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot tightly, and let it simmer for 15-18 minutes, or until all the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender.
  7. Remove the pot from heat and let it rest, covered, for 5 minutes without lifting the lid. This allows the steam to finish cooking the rice evenly.
  8. Gently fluff the rice with a fork. Stir in the fresh chopped cilantro and lime juice until well combined.
  9. Taste and adjust salt or lime juice if needed before serving.

Storage & Freezer Guide

Make it last
Refrigerator 3-4 days

Store cooled Cilantro Lime Rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Freezer Up to 3 months

Allow rice to cool completely, then transfer to freezer-safe bags or containers. Label with the date.

Reheat Stovetop/Microwave

For stovetop, add a splash of water or broth and heat over low flame. For microwave, cover and heat in 1-minute intervals until warm, stirring occasionally.

Chef’s Corner

  • For extra flavor, lightly toast the Basmati rice in the oil before adding liquid. This also helps achieve a fluffier texture.
  • Adjust the amount of green chili and lime juice to your preference. A little zest from lime can brighten the entire dish.
  • Do not lift the lid during the simmering process, and allow the rice to rest after cooking. This is crucial for perfectly cooked, fluffy rice.
